On My Way Home from Alaska; A Pop Culture Road Trip

Our family was blessed to be able to take a family vacation to Alaska this past May 2014.  After a glorious two weeks, we were flying home to Kansas City via Vancouver.  Just after we finished going through customs, I stumbled upon the following Disney toy displays in the Vancouver airport from the collector Ken Stephens of New Westminster BC.

Hey isn't that George Brett

As one of my older son's transitioned from playing Little League baseball to umpiring Little League baseball, I enjoyed watching him play and on a rare occasion would watch him umpire. After watching one of his games that he had umpired and did quite well despite some angry coaches and the fussy fans, I found myself walking to the car side-by-side with George Brett. George Brett was one of my favorite baseball players as I grew up watching the Royals. As it turns out his son was playing in the game that my son had umpired. As we walked to the car we chit chatted and visited for a while. I did not asking for an autograph.  We visited about the game, about baseball and about the weather. In the end I told him to have a nice night and he did so back to me.

Addendum; well I'm glad I didn't post this blog before today, Saturday, April 12, as my class at UMKC began today,  one of my graduate students shared or made a very quick comment about when she was a "bunny." At that point I asked her to explain.  She stated how she had been a Playboy bunny when she was a younger woman and then shared some of her stories. The class was quick to ask her if she ever met Hugh Hefner, and she stated 'no." So today I met my first Playboy bunny!

What Ever Happened to Dave Trampier?

I came across a interesting article in the daily email from ICv2 about Dave Trampier who had recently passed away.   Dave Trampier drew and painted many of the iconic images from Dungeons and Dragons' in the early years. Please follow this link to ICv2, and enjoy.

Kids Say The Darnedest Things!

Something COOL, out of the mouth of babes........

When my youngest son was in the fourth grade, he was asked to prepare word problems for his mom and dad for his parent teacher conference. When Tammy and I got to the parent teacher conference, the teacher shared Ian's word problems with us that he had designed for each of us. My wife is a very bright woman who has a masters degree in business and is very gifted with mathematics. Her word problem went something like this; when the bus came to a stop three kids got off and 10 kids got on. At the next stop six kids got often for kids got on. Etc. etc. etc. I however am only a social worker and our son's don't have a lot of confidence in my ability to assist with math homework. So the teacher apologized upfront as she shared my math problem created by Ian. There was a farmer who had three pigs in the back of his truck. He hit a bump in the road and two pigs fell out, how many pigs are left in the truck? The teacher again apologized, stating that she asked him several times if this was really the math problem that he wanted to write for his dad.  Ian was adamant, as he stated to the teacher "my dad's not very good at math!"

"A Square Foot of Me" A Photo Essay

Mission Statement

To live life as a considerate, caring, open minded husband, father, and social worker.  My goals are to teach others to respect life by leading as a servant, writing, and by meeting all at their level of functioning.  The joys of life are being accepted by others, accomplishing goals, showing empathy, playing a board game with my children, loving my wife, feeling close to God, and feeling the pull of a strong fish.

Christmas Wishes!!

No one should be too old to have a Christmas wish list.  However each year my wife privately tells me I'm hard to buy for.  My December 9th birthday only complicates things.  As a young boy, my parents waited to decorate our home for Christmas until after my birthday. My wife is ready to decorate before Thanksgiving.   Her private joke is that we agreed to decorate before my birthday in our wedding contract, including going up a ladder to hang lights on the house! (Funny stuff!)

Aside from a Sporting MLS Cup, a Missouri win against Auburn, a Final Four appearance for Kansas basketball, and Chief's/Royal's playoff berths, I hope to find these gifts under our tree.

1.  Fast & Furious 6 Blue Ray
2.  The new Johnny Cash biography; how amazing would it be to come across a Cash autograph.
3.  A Corgi Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car; to go with my newly acquired CCBB lunch box.
4.  The classic Hogan's Heroes board game; I've seen one recently on EBay for $195.
5.  A Planet of the Apes lunch box; to go with my POTA game that I found this fall.

Oh What a TURKEY!

Turkey's one and all!

Child welfare workers who's behaviors suggest that they don't like children.....

Social Workers who ignore their ethics.....

People who abuse children, and animals.....

Those who make fun of mental illness.....

Racists and those who discriminate.....

Game publishers who forget or choose not to update their websites.....

Avalanche Press.....

Gamers who have analysis paralysis.....

EBay sellers who don't properly pack their items when shipping.....

EBay sellers who over charge for shipping.....

Maybe I am the biggest turkey of all?  After attending C2E2 last spring, I returned home and began to search for a game that I wanted to give to my close friend as he had bought a similar game in the same genre.  Unfortunately I could not find it.  I searched my collection thoroughly, that included updating my database.  Despite the additional effort, I found two additional games missing.  I didn't trade them nor did I sell them.  The disappointing possibility is that they may have walked off.  How sad......

Happy Thanksgiving!
