Christmas Wishes!!

No one should be too old to have a Christmas wish list.  However each year my wife privately tells me I'm hard to buy for.  My December 9th birthday only complicates things.  As a young boy, my parents waited to decorate our home for Christmas until after my birthday. My wife is ready to decorate before Thanksgiving.   Her private joke is that we agreed to decorate before my birthday in our wedding contract, including going up a ladder to hang lights on the house! (Funny stuff!)

Aside from a Sporting MLS Cup, a Missouri win against Auburn, a Final Four appearance for Kansas basketball, and Chief's/Royal's playoff berths, I hope to find these gifts under our tree.

1.  Fast & Furious 6 Blue Ray
2.  The new Johnny Cash biography; how amazing would it be to come across a Cash autograph.
3.  A Corgi Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car; to go with my newly acquired CCBB lunch box.
4.  The classic Hogan's Heroes board game; I've seen one recently on EBay for $195.
5.  A Planet of the Apes lunch box; to go with my POTA game that I found this fall.

Oh What a TURKEY!

Turkey's one and all!

Child welfare workers who's behaviors suggest that they don't like children.....

Social Workers who ignore their ethics.....

People who abuse children, and animals.....

Those who make fun of mental illness.....

Racists and those who discriminate.....

Game publishers who forget or choose not to update their websites.....

Avalanche Press.....

Gamers who have analysis paralysis.....

EBay sellers who don't properly pack their items when shipping.....

EBay sellers who over charge for shipping.....

Maybe I am the biggest turkey of all?  After attending C2E2 last spring, I returned home and began to search for a game that I wanted to give to my close friend as he had bought a similar game in the same genre.  Unfortunately I could not find it.  I searched my collection thoroughly, that included updating my database.  Despite the additional effort, I found two additional games missing.  I didn't trade them nor did I sell them.  The disappointing possibility is that they may have walked off.  How sad......

Happy Thanksgiving!

Collectors Marketplace Comic & Toy Mall

While on a too short trip to Phoneix, AZ, I accidentally stumbled onto a very unusual mall, the Collectors Market Place Comic & Toy Mall.  Their Slogan is " the convention that never ends..."  The mall is composed of (at this time) 14 permanent dealers/tenants.  However, according to the owner, Neal Kotler, "the real magic happens on Saturdays."  The mall is open Wednesdays-Saturdays.  However they host a toy show each Saturday that includes the 14 permanent dealers and an additional 30 or so tables.  Casey Goslin shared that it is not uncommon to have 500+ toy collectors stop by on any given Saturday. On Wednesday 13 & Thursday, November 14, 2013 I interviewed several dealers about the mall and the hobby.  They included; John Leski (Toy Wizard Toys), Neal Kotler (Collectors Market Place, Casey Goslin (Collectors Market Place), Mike Bergstrom (Toy Anxiety), & Grey Rodgers (GI Joe vs. Transformers.)

Grey: How did the store come together?
Neal: The store is loosely modeled after a store in Los Angels called Frank and Sons
Casey: Neal is a third generation antiques dealer who opened his first store in 1989. Eventually he ran a monthly show at a local high school, Deer Valley Springs.
John: Eventually Neal rented a space from a closed Blockbuster video where we hosted a show every Saturday in 2010.
Neal: After two more moves, we moved to our current space this past March 2013. The store has 7000 square feet, and we currently have 14 permanent dealers.
Casey: Aside from being open 4 days a week and our Saturday shows, we have Friday Night Magic, Thursday's are Dr. Who night.  We have a GI Joe club, Transformers club, and a monthly Anime Con with Cos Play.  In addition we support community outreach and toy drives.

Grey: What is it like having that many dealers under one roof?
Neal: Aside from myself and Mike, most of the dealers have other full time jobs.  For the most part the drama is minimal. It's not uncommon for a dealer to recommend another dealer to a customer who can't find what their looking for.

While inquiring about a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Neal referred me to John, who referred me to another dealer.  Had I been able to attend the next Saturday, someone would have found me some version of the toy for me.

Grey: How long have you been a dealer?
Neal: I ran my own shop from 1989 until the mid 2000's. I have traveled all over the country buying toys including all of the big Comic Cons, and what used to be before EBay, the premiere Toy Show, Kane County Chicago Toy show.

Mike: I began working at Toy Anxiety in 1995, and purchased the store two years later. Toy Anxiety has two locations including their main store at , and a presence in the Collectors Market Place.

Grey: Are you a collector, if so what do you collect?
Casey: I'm the He-Man guy.
Mike: 1st generation Transformers, X-Men, and things with wings.
Grey R.: GI Joe, but don't tell the Transformers guys!
Neal: The best of everything comics, toys, and video games. I love vintage toys.

Grey: What's the coolest item you've seen come into the store?
Neal: My favorite piece is original Charles Schultz Peanuts art work, but I did just buy a mint Major Matt Mason Space toy.
Mike: A custom Boba Fett Predator.
Casey: a 1960's radio that pops out into a gun, it was one of the first generation spy toys.

Grey: What are some of the more interesting items in the store right now?

Grey: How have shows like Toy Hunter and Comic Book Men impacted the hobby?
Neal: I think that the shows have perpetuated stereotypes in the hobby.  We have been contacted by the producers of Toy Hunter several time, and I've told them no each time.  They wanted to set up a scenario of Jordan buying a collection in our store.
Mike: I think that Toy Hunter is a misrepresentation of the market, and then a customer thinks that their toy is worth $$ because they saw the same toy on the show, they leave disappointed.
Casey: The shows have given our customers a false sense of value.

Grey: What current trends are you seeing in the hobby?
Grey R: I think that the collector is evolving.  The completest mentality is fading out.  Many collectors are consolidating their collections.  Subsequently, I have laid out my Transformer displays as high end modern, high end collector, and children's toys.
Mike: EBay has made significant changes in the market.  (Mike has an additional store called Toy Anxiety in addition to a booth in the mall) I only sell my "good stuff" in my brick and mortar stores.
Neal: This might surprise you, as loose toys out sell the packaged toys.  The margin of value between loose and packaged toys is closing.  I would much rather sell to a collector than an investor.  Modern collectors seem to be more interested in fads and the older collector's are more educated about their hobby.

The store is located 1945 E Indian School Rd Phoenix, AZ 85016.  Neal is quite proud of the store and the store concept.  They have been featured on local television 12 times this year, and they were a New Times Best of Phoenix in 2013.  As I was about to leave after my second trip, Casey shared with me a fun story.  A customer looking for He-Man toys was referred to him, and after a discussion about rare toys, the customer turned out to be Mark Ellis, the He-Man Executive Director of Marketing.  After some good customer service, Casey shared that Mark gave him a 1982 He-Man Power Sword letter opener that was only made available to share holder.  The photo is published with permission by Casey.

Let's Go Shopping!

Oh my, I wish I had a cool grand to go shopping at Hakes Auction.  This week's League of Extraordinary Blogger's assignment is to take an imaginary shopping trip.  When visiting the Hake's Americana & Collectibles site, be sure to sign up for a free catalog. The catalogs are a great keepsake by themselves!

Many of my favorite pop culture icons are represented including Chitty Chitty Bang, Bang, Spy vs. Spy, Vampirella, Creature of the Black Lagoon, and King Kong.

I am a closet fan of Vampirella (mostly because my wife is not a fan!) One of my favorite books is Vampirella #9 as it features the art of Barry Windsor Smith.  Meeting BWS was an awesome experience and he was every so surprised to sign my copy of Vampy #9.  How I would love to pick up a Vampy #1.

Several weeks ago my wife and I watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Netflixs.  It was a trip back to my childhood.  Even all these years later, the child catcher can send shivers down my spine!  This past January of 2013 while recuperating from gall bladder surgery, I found a wonderful 1968 copy of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Milton Bradley.  How I would love a Corgi collectable.

Have you ever seen the collectible slogan, "the time to buy collectibles is when you see them." Well I think I forgot that advice last April while attending the massive toy show in Chicago.  I passed on a framed collection of Creature of the Black Lagoon Creature Feature collectible cards.  How I would love to right that wrong.

As a teenager, I was a huge fan of Spy vs. Spy.  The story of Antonio Prohais is amazing.   He was a Cuban exile who fought for free speech.  For a themed game from the 1980's, Spy vs. Spy is rather fun, and the cover is beautiful.

How I would love to own an original piece of Spy vs. Spy art.  AMAZING!

Despite these wonderful items, I have save the best for last.  How I would love to own a Fay Wray signed print.  I suspect I would have to bid against our Cool and Collected host.......

Huge kudos to Brian for having his Kickstarter funded.  Please check out several of my fellow bloggers shopping trips; Neato Coolville and AEIOU and Sometimes Why (what a great blog name.)  Who doesn't love Disney pins and Buck Rogers?

Hands Down (Clawed Hand) The Creature is My Favorite Movie Monster

My fellow Cool & Collected bloggers have the assignment of writing about our favorite movie monsters.  The Creature of the Black Lagoon is hands down my favorite movie monster follow by a very distant Mummy!  Growing un in the Kansas City metro area in the late 60's & 70's, I watched Friday Fright night each week with my father on our CBS affiliate.  The Night Stalker, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, giant mutated ants, the Mummy, and Dracula were all exciting to young boy, but the Creature was my go to movie monster.  The highlight of most Friday nights was the time spent with my dad (until he would reach out and grab my leg during a suspenful moment each week!)

I have many games and toys that I am on the look out for, but most likely the most difficult find will be the Creature board game by Hasbro.

The Monsters Cafe at Universal Studios in Orlando has a wonderful collection of monster movie props, photos, and costumes.  I wonder what the Creature and President Nixon were discussing?

Thank for sharing in my love for the Creature.  I hope you have a happy Halloween!  Please check out my fellow bloggers favorite movie monsters posts; Cool and Collected.

Plus if you have not already backed the Cool and Collected Magazine Kickstarter, please do so, or better yet, increase your pledge.

A 100+ Eyes Are Better Than Two!

I would love to find the following board games. I have never seen any of these games in the wild.  A copy of the Black Lagoon sold for over 1K several years ago on Ebay.  I did manage to find a Hogan's Heroes lunchbox last April at the Chicago toy show.  I am looking forward to attending a toy show in Sioux City in November!  What can I find for you?  a 100 set of eyes are better than just my two.
